People's Summit - Rondebosch Common

 

UCT, Rondebosch and the Rondebosch Common at the foot of Table Mountain.

27 January 2012 will stand as the day when middle class white residents of Rondebosch could have redeemed themselves. They could have come out to the Common to demonstrate their goodwill to the poor people of the Cape Flats who wanted to meet on the Common.to discuss their common housing, food security and poverty problems.

Instead they allowed the Metro Police to use a water cannon and purple ink on the people, to chase them across the Common to Kilpfontein Rd and to arrest a few of them.

I wonder what kind of damage a Casper and a water cannon and purple dye can do the sensitive ecology of the Common.

Would it be less than what 30 people standing on the pavement opposite the Common could do?

Often I take photos from a moving vehicle. Frequently it is from a public taxi. This one shows the driver's newspaper reflected in the windscreen. On the side of the road you can see informal shops selling anything from cocoa-cola to beds.
